In this tutorial we will be looking at how to change the ready message on an HP Laserjet Printer.

Works with HP Laserjet Printers with a LCD Display. This is a fun office prank that doesn’t cause any harm to the printer. It’s easy to do, the hardest part is coming up with a good message.

You will need the IP Address of the printer that is on your network.

  • Open the Terminal Application
  • Enter this Command with the IP Address of the Printer you want to change. (i.e. 192.168.1.205)

telnet 192.168.1.205 9100

  • Hit Enter then Type your message (in quotes)

@PJL RDYMSG DISPLAY=”YOUR MESSAGE

  • Hit Enter then hit ctrl+] (control right bracket)
  • then Type

quit

And hit Enter. You’re all done. you should see your message on the printer. If you would like to go back go through the same steps and type “Ready” or you can turn the printer off and on and it will reset back to the default.
